Baltimore Orioles overpower Los Angeles Angels 3-2 – MLB Update
Adam Jones drove in two runs and Brad Bergesen pitched perfectly to help the Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles 3-2 on Saturday, July 23 at Oriole Park.
A night after losing the game 1-6, the Orioles overhauled their strategy and played perfectly to stage a comeback in the three-game series. But, in reality, it was Jones whose feat rewarded the team their hard work.
“I'm not trying to put pressure on myself. I think I did enough of that last year," Jones said.
Baltimore Orioles’ manager, Buck Showalter, was also appreciative of the performance Jones evinced on Saturday. Showalter has immense confidence in this team to do more in the future.
"I've said it quite a few times and the first day of spring training, regardless of what's going on with our pitching, our team, whatever, Adam's been solid. ... Nobody in the American League's played the game with more passion and energy than Adam has,"
the manager said.
When the game started on Saturday, Brad Bergesen was supposed to do something different to avoid the repetition of what had happened only a night before as the Los Angeles Angels sparked and won 6-1.
Although Brad Bergesen was expected to do it since the start, the Orioles’ starter did not apparently seem to have things favouring him. The moment he came up on the mound, Vernon Wells had a surprise for him.
In the 2-hit first inning, Wells went for a big two-run homer for the Los Angeles Angels, triggering worry in the Orioles’ camp and excitement in the Angels line-up. Joel Pineiro, on his part, pitched well and went for shut-out innings.
As Pinerio threw three scoreless innings, the fourth started with an RBI single of Adam Jones, reviving the hopes of the Orioles. Jones homered to left to bring the lead down 2-1.
Joel probably did not play his cards the way he should have. The fifth inning saw three hits and two runs that completely changed the map of the game.
Nick Markakis snapped a single and then Adam Jones had the second run of his game and the team’s decisive third that gave the Orioles a leading edge.
Brad Bergesen then pitched with more force followed by Jim Johnson whose seventh inning streak was wonderful. Koji Uehara pitched a shutout eighth and Kevin Gregg threw a scoreless ninth to turn the 3-2 lead of the Baltimore Orioles into a victory.
The Orioles put in a decent performance as they managed to restrict the Angels’ powerful offence throughout the game. It will be interesting to see how far the Orioles can carry their winning momentum into their next match-up.
