Baltimore Orioles rally past New York Yankees 3-2 in Game 2 of ALDS – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles rallied past the New York Yankees 3-2 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Monday, October 8 in second game of their five match American League Division Series.
After suffering an embarrassing 2-7 loss in opener, the Orioles needed to regroup and fight back in Game 2 and that is exactly what they did on Monday evening.
Starting pitcher Wei Yin Chen produced a match winning performance for the Orioles as he gave up eight hits and two runs in six plus innings to grab his first win of the post season.
Striking-out batters at regular intervals, Chen mixed up his fastballs and curveballs effectively under immense pressure.
Relief pitchers Darren O’Day, Brian Matusz combined to pitch 1.2 shut-out innings to help Orioles hold on to their one run lead. Closer Jim Johnson, who gave up five runs in 0.1 innings in Game 1, managed to put things back on track as he pitched the perfect
ninth for his first save.
"It is great that he was in here," outfielder Adam Jones said in a post game interview. "Obviously it meant a lot to him as much as it did us and the fans. He doesn't come in here a lot. He takes care of business up there and we take care of it on the field.
Hopefully, the next time I see him he will be holding a trophy."
After Yankees took an early 1-0 lead, Chris Davis singled to right in the third inning to put Orioles 2-1 ahead. Mary Reynolds also played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash as he earned an RBI single to right centre in the sixth inning.
"It's real easy, like I said last night, to trust Jim Johnson," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. "He's done it a few times for us. He's having a special year, a special year."
With home conditions working in their favour, Buck Showalter and company are certainly the favourites to win the series but considering Yankees’ ability to bounce back under pressure, do not write them off just yet.
