Baltimore Orioles’ right-fielder Nick Markakis undergoes surgery to repair torn abdominal muscle
The Baltimore Orioles’ right-fielder Nick Markakis underwent surgery on Thursday to repair a torn abdominal muscle.
Markakis was injured back in September last year during a game against the Boston Red Sox. His abdomen muscles were damaged stealing a base causing him immediate pain.
Initially Markakis’ trainers believe that he did not need any surgery for this particular ailment but later discovered his abdominal muscles were severely bruised and without a surgery, it will not heal soon.
Now speculations are swirling as Markakis will not be playing in the upcoming training sessions as the player has issued a statement and said, “Spring training is what it is. It doesn't take me long to get back in the swing of things. My main concern is
just getting my strength back now. I know I'll have to work twice as hard to get back to where I want to be, but it is definitely possible this could be a good thing.”
Though Markakis is showing some great confidence but experts believe that he will not be coming soon to the baseball field and needs some time to fully recover.
On the other hand, Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter, who has recently met with Markakis, also said, “What Nicky does in January. He’ll now do in February. I want to give him that peace of mind. This guy was ready in two weeks last year. So if he starts playing
[March] 10th or 15th, he’ll be fine.”
Due to his damaged abdomen, Markakis was still able to play 160 games last year while batting at .284 with 15 homers, 73 RBIs, .351 OBP and also won his first Gold Glove in five years. His fitness is very important for the Orioles and next season, where
every MLB team will be full of energy, Markakis can play a vital role for his team.
No doubt he is a great player at right-field, but 2012 will be a challenging season for Markakis to show his full potential against the top tier teams of the Major League.
