Baltimore Orioles’ second baseman Brian Roberts on the road back to playing ball – MLB news
Baltimore Orioles’ injured second baseman Brian Roberts is making recovery from the hamstring which forced him to have a surgery after the start of the season and has gotten him on the disabled list.
The second baseman tried some short bursts of running to see how his hamstring goes, which went well. The Orioles are hoping that Brian can get into action next week in the Minors for a rehab assignment.
He started out the season in a pretty string manner and has a .417 batting average in 12 at-bats with five hits in three games.
Brian has had a struggle in the last four seasons due to injuries and has not played more than 59 games in any of the seasons. This season the hitter was quite confident of performing well before the injury in the early part of April.
Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter is pleased with the progress that the second baseman has shown. He felt that he is getting back into the right shape. Roberts will soon be on a rehab trip after he is back from Toronto where he is travelling with the birds
for their away series.
“[He] did pretty well with it,” Showalter said. “I asked Brian, I said, 'What's the difference between pretty well and great?' I think sometimes it's a mentality. You had a piece taken out. Obviously it's just letting the body cover for it. I'm hoping when
we get off this road trip, he's going out [on a rehab assignment]. We'll see.”
2001 was the Rookie year for the 35-year-old second baseman. He has so far played all his 13 Major League seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. 2005 was the most productive season of his career where he posted an impressive .314 batting average and a .387
on-base percentage. He also scored his career high 18 home-runs the same year.
With his experience, the birds will certainly be looking to get him back in the line-up. He can certainly be an important part of the team and can be a mentor to the youngster in a team that is regaining its past glory.
