Baltimore Orioles shutout Atlanta Braves 2-0 in series decider – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles showed great determination, fighting spirit and mental abilities as they shutout Atlanta Braves 2-0 at Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, June 17 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular
season.
The Orioles will be very pleased with their efforts in the last two games of the series. After Atlanta secured a narrow 4-2 win in the opener, they were the favourites to win the series but despite having all the odds working against them, the Orioles shutout
the Braves 5-0 in the second game.
Credit must be given to Orioles’ pitching attack for shutting out the Braves in two of three games. It is also the first time they have been shutout in two consecutive games since June 2009.
Wei Yan Chen had another excellent outing as he pitched seven scoreless innings to lead his side to memorable victory at Turner Field. The starting pitcher looked on top of his game play as he combined with four relief pitchers to help Baltimore continue
their impressive winning streak.
Jason Hammel played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash on Saturday when he pitched a one hitter to dominate the Braves, who have now lost six out of their last seven games. Adam Jones was impressed with what he saw from Chen on Sunday, calling
the Orioles’ win “Chen-sational”.
"It's been pretty fun to watch from center field," Jones said. "The important part of it is they always started with strike one. They've been able to do what they want because they've been ahead in counts."
"It's something you work on in spring training and it could be a difference-maker in the game, and I think it was today," Showalter said.
"I'm sure they were rolling their eyes in spring training as we were going over and over bunt defense, being an American League East team," Showalter said. "It was nice that it helped us and made a difference."
Mark Reynolds had a sacrifice fly to right in the second inning to score the first run for his team. Scott Pearce scored in the sixth inning to extend Orioles’ lead to 2-0.
