Baltimore Orioles sign Taiwanese star left-fielder Wei-yin Chen for three years – MLB News
The Baltimore Orioles are continuously making progress towards strengthening their roster for 2012 as they just signed Taiwanese sensation Wei-yin Chen to a three year contract worth approximately $11-12 million which is slightly under $4 million a season.
The Orioles’ management, who have already signed Japanese left handed pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada and are hopeful for South Korean reliever Chong Tae-Hyun as he will agree to play for the Orioles, are currently flying high for all these new signings.
However, most importantly it is confirmed now that Chen is coming in the Baltimore based baseball franchise. Chen’s arrival is a very good move for the Orioles who went with 8-10 along with a 2.68 ERA, 31 walks and 94 strike-outs in just over 164 innings
last year for the Chunichi Dragons. While his overall career includes 36-30 along with a 2.59 ERA and has struck-out 520 batters while walking 159 in just over 650 innings pitched.
On the other hand, looking at the Orioles other new signings, experts believe all these Asian Pacific players will bring a positive change in the Orioles roster next season. Not only are they very talented but they know how to bring a winning consistency
in any particular team.
Recently many professionals from the MLB organisation have appreciated the level of talent in that region including Japan, Taiwan and Korea.
Jim Small, who is MLB’s Asia vice president commented on the players from this region especially the Taiwanese players.
He said, “Especially for being an island of 20 million people, I think Taiwan punches above its weight already. So I think you're looking at that next wave coming in the next year or two.”
Later, the San Francisco Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy has also highlighted the level of talent in Chinese Taipei’s National team. He said, “They really play hard, and they play with a lot of heart. They're getting better and better, and it's exciting for
the fans of Taiwan.”
Despite all these new signings, the Orioles also need to focus on a more viable strategy for bringing consistent winning performances next season with full energy.
