Baltimore Orioles sign three for Minor League, give invites to Spring Training- MLB News
The Baltimore Orioles signed three players for Minor League and also invited them to spring training. This takes the tally of Minor Leaguers attending 2013 spring training to be held Sarasota, Florida, to 11.
The players signed include left-handed relief pitchers Zach Braddock and Daniel Schlereth and first baseman Travis Ishikawa. All three players have played in the Majors and the Baltimore ball club is looking to add more depth to its organisation by adding
these players.
Travis Ishikawa, who has been playing in the Majors on and off, has a .264 batting average and a .328 on-base percentage in the Majors playing a total of 375 games. He has played for the San Francisco Giants and Milwaukee Brewers.
Dan Duquette, executive vice president of baseball operations for the Baltimore Orioles, liked the way Ishikawa plays and believes that he can be a potential addition to the Major League team at some point in time.
“I think he has a little bit more power, he’s a line drive hitter, so I think he will have a little more power in our ballpark,” Duquette said. “We liked him. I just think there’s an opportunity for him to help our ballclub.”
Braddock has a 1-3 win loss record in 71 Major League that he has played for the Milwaukee Brewers in the last two seasons. The 25-year-old has made 18 career saves with an ERA of 4.41. He had a hard time in 2012; as he didn’t have a very good time and posted
a 7.27 ERA in 25 games.
26-year-old Daniel Schlereth has played in the last four seasons in the Majors and has a 5-6 win-loss record with one save and eight holds and has a career 4.35 ERA. He had a torrid 2012 season where he posted a 10.29 ERA in seven innings that he pitched
spanned over six games.
Daniel played a total of 11 games for high Class-A Lakeland Flying Tigers and Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens in the Detroit Tigers’ Minor League System.
Dan Duquette believes that the two reliever signed can prove to be good assets for the ball club. He believes that both are young and should have their chances.
“They have some talent and they’re both young enough that if they get a little more consistent command they could do really well,” Duquette said. “I think they will be able to compete based on their age and experience.’’
Dan also said that three players signed certainly had a chance to play for the Orioles at some point in time. “These guys we signed today, they have some possibilities with the team,” Dan Said.
The trio has had some experience at the highest level and although they have not been very successful, they still have time to improve and make it to the big leagues.
