Baltimore Orioles spoil playoffs dreams as they defeat Boston Red Sox 6-4 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles have defeated the wild-card hopeful Boston Red Sox 6-4 in back-to-back nights at Fenway Park in Boston on Wednesday, September 21 to tie the four-game series 2-all.
The Orioles are a team that has been in the limelight throughout the season due to poor performances, now they have become a nightmare for the Boston Red Sox, who are looking to enter into the playoffs.
Orioles have made just 65 wins in this season and are nowhere nearer to the playoffs but their recent performance has created real problems for some major clubs. They have won seven of their last nine games, including two over Los Angeles Angels and two
over Tampa Bay Rays. Both of these teams are also competing for post-season entry.
Baltimore was under a 4-1 deficit until the bottom of the fifth inning but the sixth started their comeback performance which they stopped after finalising their win.
J.J. Hardy singled to centre to reduce the lead to 4-2 in the top of the sixth which was followed by Mark Reynolds launching an unmatched two-run home-run to tie the game at 4-all. Boston has sensed the trouble but they could not stop it and the Orioles
grabbed their dominant position with an RBI double in the eighth.
Before this inning, their pitcher Tommy Hunter had left the game as he suffered some groin strain trouble. Hunter gave up four runs and nine hits in just over six innings. Clay Rapada carried the seventh inning and tossed only ten hitless pitches to grab
his second win of the season.
Willie Eyre continued the crushing pitching and then closer Jim Johnson closed down the game with a no-hit single inning.
Orioles aspire to return home with a positive message, something that looks like may happen.
Manager Buck Showalter said. “I think nobody has longer memories than baseball players. The more you expose young players and people that are going to be here with you, hopefully, when things get better as a team, and you get exposed to that environment
of what can be, it's always good."
Red Sox will now visit Yankee Stadium to face the American League Champions, New York Yankees for a three-game series.
