Baltimore Orioles’ starting pitcher, Miguel Gonzalez, on the road to recovery - MLB News
Baltimore Orioles are making use of technology for their pitcher, Miguel Gonzalez, to get a chance to pitch in a game without actually pitching in it. He is on the disabled list due to blisters on the right thumb
and will have an idea about his condition on Friday, May 17, 2013.
Rick Adair and Buck Showalter told the 28-year-old Mexican about the game and he immensely liked the idea to face his team mates in the virtual match.
"I think it was a good idea," Gonzalez said. "Rick Adair and Buck [Showalter] were talking about it, letting me know. I think it will be fine facing my teammates."
Gonzalez is already training and has started throwing down pitches. He will be eligible for a return to the Orioles’ ranks in the Major League on May 19 or later. Miguel is happy with the limited amount of pitches
he has thrown and felt that the ball was coming out right. He was pleased with how the whole thing went on.
"The ball was coming out good," Gonzalez said. "The breaking pitches were fine. I was pretty happy with my performance."
He has so far pitched in six games this season, all in the capacity of a starting pitcher and has an even 2-2 record. He has recorded an ERA of 3.58 and a 1.26 WHIP so far. He found much success
in his first year after posting a 9-4 winning record.
The Orioles’ will be keen on his fitness, since another one of their starting pitchers, Wei-Yin Chen, has also gone on the disabled list after having a right oblique strain. The management will certainly not
like to be in a situation where it needs to call guys from the Minors to fill in opening rotation spots.
It was considered that the pitcher can be sent to Bowie Bay Sox, Orioles’ Double-A associate for some work in the field but looking at his progress the management decided against it.
The birds will be certainly hoping to regain their full strength opening rotation to keep the team’s defences strong and remain aggressive.
