Baltimore Orioles’ starting pitcher Wei-Yin Chen on disabled list - MLB News
Baltimore Orioles’ starting pitcher Wei-Yin Chen has been placed on the 15-day disabled list after he strained his right oblique in a game against the San Diego Padres.
The injury should heal in a few days time though it is not certain whether he will be fit to play ball in 15 days time. It is one of those injuries in which a timeline of recovery is never certain.
The pitcher himself is quite disappointed by the way things have panned out. He knows that his best option is to wait for the injury to heal and take it from there.
"I'm very disappointed right now about my injury," Chen said through interpreter Tim Lin. "The only thing I can do is just [let it heal] and come back and help the team."
Chen has been one of the more consistent Orioles’ pitchers this season. He has been let down a couple of times by the offensive production though and is currently standing at an even 3-3 win-loss record in eight starts. He has so far posted a 3.04 ERA and
a 1.20 WHIP in 2013.
Buck Showalter, the manager of the Orioles was also not very excited by the situation and felt that the injury will hamper the team’s performance as Chen has been an important part.
"It's one of those things that's tough to handicap the severity of it," Showalter said.
It is likely that Jair Jurrjens will be replacing him. Jurrjens is currently playing for the Norfolk Tides, the Triple-A associates for the Baltimore Orioles. He has been impressive and Dan Duquette, the executive vice president for baseball operations seems
to have taken a liking to his performance.
Dan believed that he has pitched well at the Triple-A level and has a pretty solid game. The pitcher has a 3.14 ERA in eight starts thus far for the Tides.
"Jurrjens has pitched well at Triple-A. He's throwing his pitches for strikes, and he's pretty solid," Duquette said. "He's ironed out his delivery."
The birds will certainly find it hard to entirely replace Chen but at least they have a decent replacement who will certainly try to make an impact with the opportunity at hand.
