Baltimore Orioles stun New York Yankees 7-1 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles stunned New York Yankees 7-1 at the Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Tuesday, May 1st in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season. With their win against their American League
rivals, the Orioles also improved their win-loss record to 15-9.
Curtis Granderson provided the Yankees with an early 1-0 lead with a 413 feet home run into the right but the Yankees failed to capitalise on their advantage. The Orioles fought back strongly in the second, thanks to Chris Davis who hit a towering home run
to level the score at 1-1.
J.J. Hardy also joined the part in the third as he homered against Yankees’ starting pitcher Phil Hughes. Baltimore continued to play aggressively and they added five more runs to earn an impassable 7-1 lead. Hughes allowed four runs and four hits in just
over five innings before he was sent back to the bullpen.
"I'm very appreciative of the players making me feel really young tonight even though I'm an old goat," Orioles’ Manager Buck Showalter said
"Backdoor breaking ball. Steve Farr to Jody Reed -- front-door breaking ball," he said. "It was supposed to be back door and he popped it up, over in foul territory."
"It couldn't be more exciting," Brian Matusz said after breaking his 11-month losing streak. "Growing up I was a huge Diamondback fan, so Showalter was the manager there and I watched a lot of his games. It's an honor to be a part of that game and come away
with a win."
New York will be very disappointed with their ordinary effort in a game that proved to be completely one sided at the end.
Joe Girardi and his men had shown some great determination and fighting spirit in the opener to edge the Orioles 2-1 and they were hoping to put up a similar show on Tuesday evening but the Orioles displayed some high quality baseball skills to make the
Yankees run for their money.
It will be interesting to see if the Orioles can give an improved performance in the decisive finale to secure another important series victory.
