Baltimore Orioles take second-straight win over Oakland Athletics 4-0 – MLB Update
Batters blistered three homers as the Baltimore Orioles defeated Oakland Athletics 4-0 at Oriole Park in Baltimore on Monday, June 7.
As the Orioles have overpowered the A’s in the first game, their confidence has reached to the peak with both the ball and the bat. The Orioles’ starter Chris Jakubauskas, who has lost five consecutive games, took full advantage of the psychological lead
over the A’s and struck- out five batters without allowing any run. However, he gave away three hits and one walk but he held the opposition under extreme pressure with his fast curve-balls.
The 32-year-old right-hand pitcher threw with tremendous ability to contain the batters and earn his first win of the season. While he did not allow any run in his first start of the season, the batters on the other hand, piled up four runs to take their
another win in 2011.
James Jerry Hardy launched a one-run homer off the A’s starter Guillermo Moscoso in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. After this run, Guillermo held the Orioles scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Luke Scott launched a one-run homer to right-field
for second run.
In the sixth inning after Michael Wuertz replaced Guillermo, the Orioles’ Adam Jones launched the third homer for one-run to take the lead 3-0. In the seventh, Mark Reynolds drove in a line drive double to the left-field for an RBI single that took the game
to 4-0.
Until the end of the game, the A’s kept struggling with the bat against the Orioles’ pitchers. They faced trouble in touching the ball against the starter Jakubauskas, relievers’ Clay Rapada, Jeremy Accardo and closer Koji Uehara.
Accardo tossed two innings, allowed just two hits and made one strike-out on his 30 pitches. Uehara threw a perfect last inning, allowing just one hit and striking-out one batter on nine pitches.
On the other hand, the A’s pitchers except closer Bobby Cramer gave away at least one run over their spells. Starter Guillermo gave two homers out of five hits, allowed one walk and struck-out two batters to bear his second loss of the season. Wuertz and
Craig Breslow yielded one run each over their one inning spells while Cramer remained scoreless in last inning.
It will be interesting to see how the Orioles carry their winning momentum forward into their next game. The Athletics put in a good performance, but it was not enough to contain the Orioles’ offence.
