Recap: Baltimore Orioles versus Cleveland Indians, 8/10 @ 7:05
The Baltimore Orioles would need a major miracle to occur for them to see post-season play this season. However, since Buck Showalter took over they at least have to be thinking the future is looking a whole lot better.
If the team can put together a few more games like they did Tuesday night against the Cleveland Indians they might at least end up seeing a few more fans in the stands.
Four different players ended up hitting home runs to lead the Orioles to a 14-8 win over the Indians to give Buck Showalter his seventh win since taking over the last place team a little more than a week ago. It was also the first game on the road since Showalter has been manager.
The first home run came courtesy of left fielder Felix Pie in the fifth inning. After Cleveland had scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning the Orioles were down 4-6 going into the fifth. That changed after Pie hit a three run shot deep over the centerfield wall off of Indians starter Justin Masterson, scoring Nick Markakis and Adam Jones in the process.
Baltimore would not relinquish the lead again, but would hit three more home runs to certainly pad it. Corey Patterson would hit a solo shot in the sixth inning to give the Orioles an 8-6 advantage. Catcher Matt Weiters would hit a two run shot to start the scoring in what would be a six run eighth inning for Baltimore. Luke Scott, who got the start at first base, hit the fourth homerun, a three run shot to end the scoring for the Orioles for the night.
Michael Brantley would close the gap in the ninth inning with a two run homerun off of reliever Armando Gabino to end the scoring for the game.
Each Indians pitcher would end up giving up a homerun; Masterson gave up Pie’s; Tony Sipp would give up Patterson’s; Frank Herrmann gave up Weiters’; and Hector Ambriz gave up the final one to Luke Scott. Two of the runs scored by Luke Scott would get credited to Herrmann since Ambriz inherited the runners from him.
Masterson was a former prospect for the Boston Red Sox before being traded to the Indians in July of 2009. The young right hander is only 5-17 since joining the Indians (in 32 starts); in 15 starts over two seasons with Boston he was 6-5.
