Baltimore Orioles whacked by Toronto Blue Jays 12-6 at Rogers Centre- MLB News
Baltimore Orioles were whacked hard by the Toronto Blue Jays as they lost the series opener 12-6 at the Rogers Centre on Thursday, May 23, 2013. The game slipped out of the Orioles’ hands due to some bad bullpen
pitching and indifferent fielding effort.
It was a much anticipated debut for the 22-year-old pitcher Kevin Gausman who recorded a loss despite of a decent effort. He allowed four runs in the five innings that he pitched in, striking out five batters
in the process and allowing seven hits.
The pitcher said that he has had a bit of insomnia lately due to the anticipation of the opportunity. Now that it is out of the way, Kevin hopes that he can catch on with some sleep.
“I've been waiting my entire life for this, and I haven't been able to sleep very much lately,” said Gausman,. “So it was something that was great to get out of the way. Hopefully I can sleep tonight.”
Inspirational Orioles’ manager, Buck Showalter, was full of praise for Gausman whom he found to be a smart person. The manager said that the youngster made him proud and he will surely learn a lot from his experience
in the Major League.
“He gave us the chance to win and he'll learn from it. He's a smart young man and he has a presence and his presentation. I'm proud of him,” Showalter said.
The game started with Orioles getting on top early. They were three runs ahead in the top of the fourth innings, courtesy to a two-run RBI double by Manny Machado and a solo home-run by Chris Davis.
The Blue Jays, however, made a comeback and were able to score two runs in the bottom of the innings. They took the lead in the fifth when J.P. Arencibia went long with a base loaded.
Pedro Strop was hit for a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth innings which more or less sealed the fate of the game. The ball remained in the fair area with the help of a foul pole deflection.
Alexi Casilla added a run through sacrifice fly in the seventh and two more runs were added when Nick Markakis and Adam Jones hit back to back home-runs in the eighth. An eventful bottom of the innings saw the
Toronto ballclub add another four runs.
The Orioles were unable to add the six tying runs needed in the ninth and went down.
Catcher Matt Wieters felt that better pitching and defensive play is much needed by the Baltimore ballclub to avoid such hard defeats.
“Every game's big, but we definitely have to pitch and play defense better tomorrow and hopefully that gives us a better shot to win,” said Wieters.
It was a good win for the Blue Jays who are currently at the bottom of the American League East. The birds meanwhile will need to get their act together in the remaining three games of the series.
