Baltimore Ravens DC Dean Pees aims to be different in workout approach -NFL News
Baltimore Ravens’ new defensive coordinator, Dean Pees, has said that his playbook will be different from his predecessor, Chuck Pagano’s who has deserted Ravens to join the Indianapolis Colts as head coach.
Pees mingled with the players at organised team activities (OTAs) for the first time since being promoted as an assistant defensive coach under the supervision of John Harbaugh, Ravens' head coach.
He said:
"It's an incredible opportunity to be a defensive coordinator for anybody in this league, but it's especially humbling to be one for the Ravens. I'm not going to be the same as Chuck Pagano. You got to be who you are."
Ravens' defence has been among the top few in the league. The team as a matter of fact has historically relied on its defensive department in a majority of wins.
Apparently, the new coach is aiming to build on the legacy the former coach has left despite having a different approach to training and grooming the players.
Even the head coach realises the fact that the new coach will be having a different way to perform his role as the defensive coach and has backed him.
Harbaugh said:
"I think he'll be Dean Pees. He'll bring his personality (to the job). He's a very detail-oriented coach, very organised."
Pees has previously worked with Ravens as the linebackers' coach.
His role was changed after the departure of Pagano, who has taken the place of Colts' former head coach, Jim Caldwell, who has now become Ravens' quarterbacks' coach.
The 2012 National Football League (NFL) season is going to be Pees’ first as Ravens' defensive coordinator and he looks to take things seriously from the very beginning.
Yet, his message to the players is the same.
“Just play, be yourself and go out there and whoop somebody's behind," as explained by defensive tackle, Terrence Cody.
This shows that he might not prefer to build things from scratch, even though he will be carrying a different playbook.
