Baltimore Ravens kicker, Billy Cundiff, has spoken of his frustration over missing a clear goal opportunity in their game against the New England Patriots, on Sunday, January 22, 2012, which made them to lose the game with the final of score 20 to 23 points
at the end.
Commenting on his miss for the first time since their loss on the weekend the kicker said that there should not be an excuse for his miss, saying he had kicked the kick for a thousands time before and he should have scored a goal.
"It's a kick I've kicked probably a thousand times out there," Cundiff said "I didn't convert, and that's the way things go. There's really no excuse for it. I think the disappointment is letting my teammates down."
The Cundiff missed opportunity was followed by tripping of a catch by their wide receiver, Lee Evans, with a couple of seconds to go to end of the game. Ravens quarterback, Joe Flacco, had thrown a perfect pass to Evans he could not hold onto the catch while
his feet on the ground.
By virtue of the repeated lapse the Patriots were able to inflict a defeat on the Ravens, ending their Super Bowl hopes yet again.
In spite of the Cundiff’s apparent acceptance of the responsibility the rest of the team has refused to pin point the loss on any of their player.
"Disappointing, stunning loss at the end there," coach John Harbaugh said. "I thought our guys played their hearts out. ... We came up a play or two short at the end ... but I'm proud of them."
The coach’s view was backed by Ravens linebacker, Ray Lewis, who said that it was a team failure not due to the play of one or two players.
"Not one play won or lost this game," Ray Lewis said. "There's no 'Oh, Billy's the fault. Billy missed the (kick).' There's no freaking 'Billy missed the kick.' It happened. Move on."
A similar viewpoint was expressed by the team’s quarterback, Joe Flacco, who had came closer to help his side stage a win, when he threw the perfect ball to Evans.
It is probably the Ravens failure for fourth time that is more frustrating for their players. Almost all of them have been a part of the team during all three successive unsuccessful runs for the Super Bowl.
Some of those players are nearing end of their career and were seeing the Patriots game as the last opportunity to be part of a Super Bowl playing side.
With that chances wasted again, they have expressed their disappointment respectively. Only few of them are hopeful about having that opportunity once again next season.
