Baltimore Ravens back DC Dean Pees rebuild depleted defence-NFL News
The Baltimore Ravens have backed their new defensive coordinator, Dean Pees, to reorganise their depleted defensive line.
Ravens, who are known for the strong defence in the league and have relied on it in their most victories including those of the past season, are struggling to maintain the required depth in the department now for many reasons.
One of the factors behind the fast depleting defensive group is the loss of some players to other teams on the league.
Furthermore, the players like safety, Ed Reed and linebacker, Ray Lewis, are coming of age in their professional careers.
They had been a part of the team for too many years now and with their level of strength and energy they need additional workout and training to remain fit and in shape.
Again, the age factor is not a motivation for them to work harder and faster, which tends to be the approach of the new defensive coordinator.
Pees has been promoted by Ravens to take place of Chuck Pagano, their former defensive assistant coach, who has joined the Indianapolis Colts as head coach.
Pees is supervising organised team activities (OTAs) as the defensive coach for the first time and the way he has adopted for his workout looks to be very up-tempo, faster at speed and harder at training.
The injury of linebacker, Terrell Suggs, is another setback to Ravens’ defence.
A torn Achilles tendon is set to make Suggs sit out at least initial half of the upcoming season, but there are concerns he might miss the entire season nursing his injury.
Given such injuries take longer time to heal and a number of setbacks in the recovery process are attached to them, the management has refrained from speculating an exact timeline for his return.
Meanwhile, head coach, John Harbaugh, has backed Pees for his workout approach, which he says is out of the box and creative.
He said:
"If you talk to the players, they'll tell you he definitely has got his own style. How to describe it I don't know. He's forceful, obviously. He's confident. He's been doing this a long time. I think he's very creative.”
It now remains down to the performance by Ravens next season to prove the coach’s hard work was worth credibility.
