Baltimore Ravens make in-house changes to fill defensive coach Chuck Pagano’s position – NFL News
The Baltimore Ravens have gone for reshuffling of their coaching department to fill in the position of their former defensive co-ordinator, Chuck Pagano, who has joined Indianapolis Colts as a head coach.
According to a statement from Ravens management, they have promoted their linebackers coach, Dean Pees, to take over the spot left by Pagano.
They have also retained their offensive co-ordinator, Cam Cameron.
Further, Colts coach, John Harbaugh, confirmed that their special teams assistant coach and assistant of their head coach, Jerry Rosburg, is going to join them again next week.
"Cam Cameron has been our offensive coordinator and will continue to be our defensive coordinator, and Dean will be our defensive coordinator," Harbaugh said.
"The tradition of this defence will continue, and it will flourish and it will get even better."
Pees in his post-replacement comments said that he will try to work within his limits and that he might not be able to reach the height of their former coach, Pagano.
"I'm not going to be the same as Chuck," Pees said.
"You got to be who you are. It is an incredible opportunity to be a defensive coordinator for anybody in this league, but it's especially humble to be one for the Ravens."
Pagano joined Colts last week. He will be working at the place of their former head coach, Jim Caldwell, who has been sacked by team’s owner, Jim Irsay, over the poor 2011 NFL regular season at 2-14.
The former coach had spent only a year at Ravens and ended the past season with a record of 3-4. He was helpful in building Ravens’ defence to be the second best on the league.
The year 2011 was one of the most successful seasons for Ravens. They finished atop the American Football Conference (AFC) North division, win the divisional title, had a perfect home record, claim a bye in the wild-card round and won the playoff.
They ended up losing the AFC championship game against the New England Patriots. Given the achievement it was unlikely for any of the team’s officials to be in the line of fire.
Pagano is the first official to have parted ways with them. He was being pursued by Colts for the head coaching role.
The defence has been a key to most of Ravens wins during past few years. It is this significance that they have always been with a fulltime defensive co-ordinator.
Their former co-ordinator had a great role in the training and development of their veterans, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and Ray Rice.
Almost all of them are backbone to their team’s defence. A number of them are near to end of their career after having played more than a decade at the side.
