Baltimore Ravens’ offence takes over defence in performance chart – NFL News
The Baltimore Ravens have always relied on their defence in a majority of wins in the past but the department is still to find form and rhythm this season amid a lingering question if it will be able to do so or whether the team has moved out of the total-defence-dependence
era since striking an even balance on the offence side.
Quarterback Joe Flacco starred in victory of the Ravens in the season opener, though he could not maintain the same level of performance in the next which they lost. The defence, however, was lagging behind equally in both games and some commentators doubt
if the team is in the same defence-focused era.
The question is imminent amid QB Joe Flacco’s boasting to enjoy the high-speed offence and the performance number apparently back his view. He has definitely improved since being trained by quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell.
Linebacker Ray Lewis in the meantime does not agree to it. He thinks it is too early to assess the defence’s performance. According to him:
"I think at the end of the year is when you pay attention to stats. When people talk about our defence, whatever they want to say at the beginning of the year, we always say find us at the end of the year because you know where we're going to be."
His view has a value in a sense that the team’s defensive line is studded with a number of star performers including veteran safety Ed Reed, though they will certainly miss another star linebacker Terrell Suggs, who is out of the side for almost the entire
season with a torn Achilles tendon.
Reed was particularly impressive in the opening game of the season against the Cincinnati Bengals. He gave Bengals’ quarterback Andy Dalton a tough time on the field and the Bengals eventually lost the tie.
Irrespective of the offence’s strong form, Ravens’ defence still has a great importance to overall team performance and wins, and the continued slump on the defensive line can have an impact on overall results of the games in the future.
A turnaround from the defence will definitely help the team’s victory chances.
