Baltimore Ravens offensive line coach sentenced to probation after drunk driving
Andy Moeller, offensive line coach for the National Football League (NFL), Baltimore Ravens football team, was found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol and sentenced to two years of supervised probation, according to a Baltimore, Maryland area
newspaper.
The 47-year old assistant coach was ordered to continue rehabilitation for alcohol, which includes meeting weekly with Alcoholics Anonymous and random drug testing, as well as from abstaining from any alcoholic beverages and drugs.
Moeller must also file reports directly to district court every 60 days, as ordered by a Baltimore County District Court judge.
According to Maryland State Police, Moeller was pulled over for speeding on a highway in Maryland on September 18. The same newspaper said that Moeller had trouble with the sobriety test and smelled of alcohol, leading to his arrest.
Just one month before the arrest, Moeller had charges of negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol dropped against him because his attorney, Andrew Alperstein, said that the judge agreed that Moeller wasn’t the one driving the vehicle
at the time.
After the arrest, Alperstein had said that his client would plead not guilty to seven charges, which include the drunken driving and speeding charges. At that time, the team was aware of the incident, according to Ravens team spokesman Kevin Byrne, but they
did not release any official statement.
Since the sentencing, the franchise and league have not responded to the court mandated probation, but Steve Bisciotti, owner of the Ravens, said a couple of months ago that this was the last chance for Moeller.
"He's either going to get it under control or he's going to spend a lifetime of misery like other people that are affected by that", Bisciotti told
the same newspaper that reported the arrest and sentencing.
"We're behind him as long as he earns trust and continues to earn that trust. But he knows he's one step away from not being a Raven and then probably not being in the NFL at all".
Moeller is the son of University of Michigan head coach, Gary Moeller. Gary has 50 wins, 37 losses and six ties in his coaching career, which started in 1967 with the Miami University Redhawks and ended in 2003 with the Chicago Bears.
He was best known for his five years with the Michigan Wolverines where he won 44 games, lost 13 and tied three. Andy Moeller also coached the Wolverines. He spent eight years coaching them after he played as linebacker for the team.
In 1986, he led the team with 138 tackles and is still number 12 on the school’s list for the most career tackles with 326.
He joined the Ravens in 2008 and was promoted to offensive line coach in January.
