Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed determined to prolong pro career – NFL News
Baltimore Ravens’ veteran and unpredictable safety Ed Reed has again reiterated he foresees a long-term future with the team and claimed that a talk around the prospects with the management has already been initiated.
The disclosure is in direct contradiction of the reports, which had been in circulation during the entire offseason that the safety was contemplating retirement and might not be available even for this season.
These reports were given boost by the player’s absence from the entire offseason programme of the team. This includes the three-day mandatory minicamp.
He surprised everyone by showing up at training camp without any delay and now has laid the claim that he is looking forward to playing with the team in the longer-run.
According to the safety, he has already told Ravens' general manager Ozzie Newsome about his desire to stay a Raven in the longer run.
Reed said:
"Talks have already been there. I know Ozzie and them know I want to be here. We will get that done when it's time to cross that bridge. I'm good with football right now. I know the Ravens know I want to be here. I wouldn't give myself to the football team
like I do if I didn't want to be here."
The safety is into last year of his previous six-year, $40 million contract. He is due to earn about $7.2 into the last season of the deal this year and now expecting a fresh contract at the end of the current one.
No one from the Ravens' management including the GM himself has commented on the latest disclosure by Reed and it is difficult to determine at this stage if he is going to be landed a contract.
Earlier, Reed said he skipped the offseason programme due to some domestic problems and did not consider retiring at this moment of his career at all.
He said:
"I'm here, man. What transpired months back transpired. I had to deal with family-wise and what I've been going through for the last 11 years now in the league, you know it's always a time when you have to assess yourself."
Nonetheless, he looks in good shape and upbeat about the upcoming season – good news for the Ravens that he has returned to old form and spirits.
