Baltimore Ravens’ safety Haruki Nakamura keen on move elsewhere to win starting role-NFL News
Either of the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts is tipped to be the next destination for Baltimore Ravens’ safety, Haruki Nakamura, who is out to explore an opportunity of joining another National Football League (NFL) team, which offers him a starting
role.
Both teams are reported to be interested in the player’s signing on his availability on the free agency, which starts at 4.00 ET/US time on Tuesday, March 13, 2012.
He said:
"I’m not looking for interest, I’m looking for a real opportunity and a contract. We’ll find out soon what free agency is going to be like for me."
Although, Nakamura has not ruled out coming back to Ravens, it is least likely to happen amid the player’s reservations of having being overshadowed by the dominant role of safety, Ed Reed.
Reed starts for Ravens and his presence on the line seems to override performance of other players. This is something that Nakamura is aiming to come out of and seeking to develop as an independent and individual player.
The free agency remains the only option for him at this juncture of the season, and if he is able to win a place elsewhere in the league, the move will certainly serve his ambitions of growing into the starting role.
The player added:
"I would love to be back with the Ravens, but I also want the opportunity to compete for more playing time. That’s the next step I want to take. If Baltimore were to come back and say there’s something of a guaranteed opportunity to compete for more playing
time, then I would definitely be very interested. It’s all about opportunity, it’s not necessarily all about money."
Despite the interest from Steelers and Colts in signing Nakamura, the player seems to be less excited about the prospects.
It could be due to the fact that both teams are going through respective problems and an element of uncertainty remains there, at the moment, at least.
Steelers until recently were making abrupt changes in the squad, and have relieved a number of players to address their salary cap issue.
There is no confirmation how much room they have created on their roster since the release of some players, which should allow them to spend on new hiring.
Colts are even in greater troubles and have introduced rash cleansing of the team. In the drive, they have already cut half a dozen players in one go, and Nakamura seems less impressed with their interest.
At this time, it is difficult to ascertain if Nakamura will be able to find a team that offers him the starting role.
Meanwhile, Ravens’ management is yet to present their take on the issue.
