Baltimore Ravens superior defence takes them through Kansas City Chiefs in 9-6 win – NFL Recap
Baltimore Ravens defence resumed their normal service this season, as they kept Kansas City Chiefs from reaching the end zone in Week 5, 9-6 victory on Sunday, October 07, 2012, at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO.
The defence of both teams showed good performance, not allowing a single touchdown during the game, but the three field goals by kicker Justin Tucker was enough for Ravens to win the game.
Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis was at the top of his game as he got 10 tackles and was able press Chiefs wide receiver Jamaal Charles and the rest of the passing game. During postgame interview, Lewis said:
"This game is as hard as it gets. We knew the kind of game we were going to get out of these guys. We knew it would be a tough sled. For us to come in and just keep fighting, keep fighting, keep fighting, that's the one thing we talked about. ... Today was
a big win for us."
Meanwhile, Chiefs offence looked vulnerable again as quarterback Matt Cassel gave away two fumbles. He was also intercepted twice during the game.
Cassel covered only 92 yards, before being carted off the field after getting a hit in the fourth quarter. The quarterback reportedly had a head injury.
This gave the opportunity to backup quarterback Brady Quinn. Fans cheered his arrival on the field. He finished with three of three for 32 yards.
Charles looked good but was unable to put impressive performance in the second half. Turnovers remained the main cause of concern for Chiefs, who have given as many as 19 turnovers this season.
Ravens offence was not at its best. It was the first time that they struggled during this season on the offence.
Quarterback Joe Flacco completed a meagre 187 yards while running back Ray Rice got 101 running yards. According to the Associated Press, Lewis said:
"The ones that count the most are never the prettiest. The ones that count the most are the ones that you have to fight through. Anybody on each side of the ball will tell you they'll take a 'W' before anything.”
Chiefs started the game in a very confident way in the first quarter. The relied heavily on passing game of Charles, but were unable to reach the end zone.
Tucker scored his first field goal from 28 yards to take his team to second quarter 3-0. In the second quarter, Chiefs managed to level the score through a 30-yard field goal by Ryan Succop.
Ravens started poorly in the second half as they fumbled in their first play, but Chiefs were unable to utilise it properly as Cassel fumbled on the one-yard line. Tucker struck twice in the third quarter, taking the score to 9-3.
Succop’s field goal late in the final quarter was unable to stop Ravens from winning the game.
