Baltimore Ravens unmoved by QB Joe Flacco’s self-rating of being the best in league-NFL News
The Baltimore Ravens are unmoved by quarterback, Joe Flacco’s self-rating, in which he has ranked himself as the best QB in the National Football League (NFL), apparently with the belief that displaying such an attitude is a routine phenomenon for the player.
Ravens’ general manager, Ozzie Newsome, and head coach, John Harbaugh, have sidelined themselves from commenting much on the latest statement from Flacco.
They said it was common for the player to cause stir in the football community through his attention-seeking and self-assuring statements.
Newsome said:
"For Joe to say that, I think it's a common thing."
He added:
"I don't think any player, any coach, any GM does not think they are the best at what they do."
Eli Manning, the quarterback of the New York Giants, had caused similar hustle bustle in the NFL circles by rating himself, in a radio programme, to be at par with Tom Brady and his elder brother, Peyton Manning, the two leading QBs of the league.
That was a very rare and probably the only statement from Eli as he has not been a part of any such controversy in the past.
Flacco, on the other hand, is known for his outbursts and has regularly been triggering debates through rather surprising views about his game or status in the league.
Last year, he more than once complained about being ignored by the team in the credit-giving. He believed that he had as greater role in Ravens wins as their defensive players, but felt being sidelined in the appreciation.
This is the reason that his latest remarks have not attracted much attention from any quarter. As expected, his team is even more silent over the issue.
So, the player might not be successful in his intentions of triggering a controversy or debate around the ratings of quarterbacks.
He, however, has an opportunity to prove himself to be the best in the future. The stage seems well set for him. Now the team has facilitated him with a fulltime offensive coach, since joining of former Indianapolis’ coach, Jim Caldwell, as a quarterbacks’
coach at Ravens.
Apparently, the team has shifted its focus on the offence to create a balance between its defensive and attack lines. So, the question of giving less significance to the quarterback seems to have been resolved now.
While it remains difficult for Flacco to convince people to believe he is the best, the future presents him with an opportunity to prove on the field that there is no doubt in his claims of being the best.
With the future chances still quite far away, Flacco’s self-rating has not been able to make an impression on the football community this time around. Even his own team has refused to buy his claims.
