Baltimore Ravens' wide receiver Derrick Mason breaks finger, again
Derrick Mason, a starting wide receiver for the Baltimore Ravens, had already broken his right pinky finger once this year and needed a pin inserted to correct the damage. Now it’s been reported that he’s broken the same finger, this time in a different
place. Still, the 14-year veteran says it won’t keep him out of this Sunday’s games against the Carolina Panthers.
“There's nothing they can do this time,” Mason said. “It's just something that's going to have to heal on its own. Hopefully it won't hamper me more than a couple weeks. When I'm out there, I don't really think too much about it.”
The Baltimore Ravens are 6-3 on the season, but they can’t afford to lose any of their receiving corps. Their passing is the team’s weakest area, ranked 17th in the league.
Mason has started in every game for the Ravens so far this season. He has 34 receptions, 447 yards and three touchdowns, and is second on the team in both receiving yards and catches.
Over his 14-year career, Mason has 11,536 receiving yards and 62 touchdowns. In eight of those seasons he had over 1000 receiving yards.
The Panthers are 1-8 and have an injury riddled line-up that shouldn’t provide much of a challenge for the Baltimore Ravens. The Panthers do have the 5th best pass defence in the league, but that won’t be much of a factor on Sunday, even if Mason
is unable to contribute as he normally does.
Anaquan Boldin is the other starting wide receiver, and the team has T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Donte Stallworth down the depth chart if Mason has s difficult time catching the ball.
Baltimore is currently in a battle with the Pittsburgh Steelers for top spot in the AFC North and a victory against the struggling Panthers is a necessity for them.
