  1. Burning is not really necessary unless you want to. The Rhizome cannnot live without canes. Cut the canes, kick over the shoots, and it will die.

Dont forget that not all bamboo is running and invasive. If you want bamboo that stays in one place, there are hundreds of species of nice clumping bamboo that will NOT spread.

  2. The thing about bamboo is that IS GRASS. Like bermuda grass, asparagus, ferns, and sedges, instead of spreading by traditional methods, (for the most part) it spreads by rhizomes beneath the ground a few inches.

The two most common methods of removal would be digging up  the earth, burning, digging, burning until it is all gone like the above poster said.

OR you could just cut it all down, and then continually (probably daily) mow over any new chutes that sprout up until the root system drains all of its energy and dies away.

With runnin bamboo like you have you can use a spade to keep it from spreading by digging straight down along the perimeter you want, cutting through the rhizomes to keep the bamboo area contained.

Good luck! Bamboo is a bear to get rid of!

  3. Depending on the species of bamboo, some are easier to get rid of that others. I had a coworker who literally had to burn his yard and to get the bamboo and dig up soil and re burn to get rid of it. It can be a very resilient. Even after all that, he had to return to the area and pull any bamboo that recently sprouted up. If you don't want to burn, I would try a broad herbicide like round-up.
