Let me tell you a thing about me; I like bananas!

Just recently I was looking at a banana and I thought to myself "Hey, most creatures that eat bananas probably do not peel them, so maybe banana skins could be useful".

What are the health benefits of consuming banana skins? With that in mind, what are the detriments?

I don't mind the taste of banana skins, but It's not as good as the banana itself!

Scientific facts/links will get you browny points.

  1. dont think you can eat it..even monkeys peel them!!

You can use banana peel inside out for treatment of warts. Use the peel inside out and cover the wart by taping it. Once the peel turns black remove and continue this for some weeks to get relief from wart.

You can use banana peel for treating poison ivy rashes. Rub the peel inside out over the rashes; it soothes the skin to provide a cooling effect.

Banana peel can be used if you have bruised yourself. Tape it overnight to see the positive results in the morning.

  2. I don't care much for banana peels, but I can say this. Chimps prefer organic bananas over conventional ones, and they will eat organic bananas with the peel on while they peel the conventional ones. I would recommend organic only if you are going to eat the peel.

  3. I've never heard of any creature eating the peel but try it! I would suggest cooking it in some way to make it more palatable and digestible; try juicing it!

I HAVE heard of smoking the peels though I will not cop to the effects. lol.

  4. Cookie boy your crazy!!

this is proof of evolution right here haha

this is the best question ive ever seen on here. im gonna star it or somehting if i can figure out how to. haha omg i love you!!

  5. I know this - bananas are sprayed with insecticide to discourage the big spiders that like to come in on them.  So - a banana skin is a big insecticide treat.

  6. apes/monkeys do peel bananas, and i assume that apart from that thin layer on the inside you cant digest them and they will just pass through.

mildly interesting banana factoid: apes/monkeys open their bananas from what we consider the bottom. this results in a tiny bit more banana as part of the edible part of what we consider to be the top is rubbed off into the peel by the motion of opening the peel.

  7. Yes you can eat them.

Each individual fruit (known as a banana or 'finger') has a protective outer layer (a peel or skin) with a fleshy edible inner portion. Both skin and inner part can be eaten raw or cooked. Western cultures generally eat the inside raw and throw away the skin while some Asian cultures generally eat both the skin and inside cooked. Typically, the fruit has numerous strings (called 'phloem bundles') which run between the skin and inner part. Bananas are a valuable source of vitamin B6, vitamin C, and potassium.

Note, though, that I have never actually eaten them myself.

  8. I don't know the answer to your question - but I have seen apes eat bananas at the zoo, and they do peel them!  Can't speak for other creatures, but even the apes seem to know better.  I like bananas too but will not eat the skins; I would guess that our bodies can't digest them very well.

  9. It's interesting that you wouldn't mind eating the peels.  I personally don't even like those little strings that sometimes remain on the banana after I peel them.  They are bitter to me and I make sure there are none left.

My husband on the other hand does not peel kiwis before he eats them.  I think that is gross too :)

Good luck to you in whatever you chose and I hope you get better answers than mine.  I just couldn't help but commen t:)

  10. I say go for it if you're that hung up on bananas! It just might be hard to p**p for a while... but if you feel bananas are worth it.. go for it!  Bananas contain lots of potassium... sorry those are all the facts I know on them.
