I want to start wood working as a hobby but i cant decide on buying a band saw or a scroll saw? I want to be able to cut shape from wood. The last project i build involved 120mm depth wood, and a coping saw. Can i get a scroll saw that will cut 120mm wood or do i need a band saw?

  1. Two different tools for two different jobs. A band saw will have a blade that is to wide fot intricate work.

  2. If this is one of your first tools I would get a band saw. You can make cross cuts, rip cuts, re-saw thick wood into thinner material. It won't replace a table saw, but a band saw and a router will do just about anything you need. I have both band saw and scroll saws. I use the band saw about four to one over the scroll saw.

    Hope that helps

  3. Depending upon the types of cuts you are making a scroll saw is more versatile for making tight detailed cuts, but is typically only good for cutting wood about 2'' (approx. 50mm)  If you are cutting basic shapes and not doing a lot of tight detailed work, and you are using thicker wood then the band saw is more practical as a 1st edition to building your shop.

  4. id get a band saw,,two wheel not three

  5. Depends on the type of wood working. Band saw for larger work and a scroll saw for finer work ;)))
