Bangladesh holds their nerve to topple http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 in Group B match of the World Cup
BAN 205 in 49.2 overs IRE 178 in 45 overs
Hosts http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 held off the challenge of the Irish team to record a much needed 27-runs win in their second Group B match of the World Cup played at the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Mirpur.
The hosts made a splendid recovery after being bowled out for a below-par total at a decent batting track to skittle out the Europeans 28 runs below the target.
The match got off to a flying start for the hosts who smashed 53 runs inside the first six overs mainly thanks to skills of the their most impressive batsman: left-handed Tamim Iqbal. Iqbal’s 44 off only 43 balls was the best score of the day and eventually
earned him the Man of the Match award, despite the heroics of Bangladesh seamer Shafiul Islam who snared 4 wickets to quash the Irish dreams of victory.
The Bangladeshis were bitterly disappointed with their batting performance which saw them throw away the rollicking start to be rolled over for just over 200.
Other than http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tamim-Iqbal-c2640 none of the leading batsman was able to counter the discipline of the Irish bowlers who had little venom in their attack other than reliance on a perfect line and length.
While http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hasan-c61990 failed to give the innings the required impetus at the f*g end.
The Irish batsmen looked overawed in their first experience of playing international cricket in the sub-continent, the openers were sent packing early and half the side was dismissed with only 110 runs on the board.
The Bangladesh team was spurred on by jubilant fans and their joy was incredible when Mohammad Ashraful, the diminutive former captain, sent two batsmen packing with his sharply turning off-spinners.
Shafiul Islam did the cleaning job with great skills and accuracy as the Irish capitulated on the last ball of the 45th over without utilising the power play option at the end of the innings.
Tamim was named Man of the Match for his crucial contribution with the bat that ended up being the match winning effort.
