Bangladesh to host 2014 World Cup while UDRS System approved: ICC

Following the appointment of former BCCI Chief Sharad Pawar as the newly-elected ICC President, the International Cricket Council announced some important decisions regarding the upcoming tournaments on the 1st of July, 2010. It was announced at a meeting in Singapore that Bangladesh would host the T20 World Cup in 2014. It was also decided that Sri Lanka would organize the T20 World Cup in 2012 while Australia and New Zealand won the bid to jointly host the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2015. England, who organized last year’s T20 World Cup in 2009, will get a chance to hold the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 and finally, the Women’s ICC World Cup 2013 will take place in India.

Bangladesh has previously organized the ICC Champions Trophy in 1998, which was formerly known as the mini World Cup. The South Asian nation also got a chance to host the Asia Cup in 1988 and 2000 along with the ICC U-19 World Cup in 2004. They are also one of the countries which will co-host the 2011 ICC World Cup along with India and Sri Lanka. But this will be the first time that the tenth ranked member in test cricket will get a chance to host a World Cup on its own, but it is believed that Bangladesh have sufficient experience in that department.

At the meeting, the Chief Executives Committee (CEC) and Governance Review Committee (GRC) met to discuss the major upcoming tournaments and competitions. The format and qualification for these events was brought under review and the introduction of Test and ODI leagues were discussed. A special group in the CEC has been setup for the specific purpose of assisting in the decision making process. They also plan on submitting relevant proposals for the CEC to consider in September, 2010. The group consists of representatives from almost all the participating countries which include David Collier from England and Wales, Nishantha Ranatunga from Sri Lanka, Australia’s James Sutherland and David Richardson, who is the ICC General Manager.

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat added that the ICC planned to use T20 cricket to improve the popularity of the game and increase participation in the 50 over World Cup. “There is clearly an appetite from all quarters to examine the make-up of the ICC Cricket World Cup and the ICC World Twenty20 and seek the best balance between excellence and development”, he said. Team participating in the World Cup could be reduced while the World T20 Championship can expect more teams in the coming editions. “Although we have made good progress, this exercise requires more work. We know there are exciting opportunities to protect and promote all three formats but we must exercise patience as we consider all aspects in introducing context and content in international cricket."

Among the other important things discussed at the Singapore meeting, the ICC stated that they would approve of the use Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) in the tournament until there was better technology introduced by the ICC. Haroon Lorgat insisted that the system should be used throughout the game on the international stage. According to Lorgat, the CEC and the ICC board fully agreed on the decision of continuing with the UDRS.
