Bangladesh v West Indies – http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 (1st Test) – Match Recap [Day 1]
Debutant Sohag Gazi appeared to have put Bangladesh in a position of dominance with his early wickets, but centuries from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/S-Chanderpaul-c2390 enabled the West Indies to take back control, ending at 361 for 4 by stumps on the first day
(November 13) of their ongoing Test match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
The day kicked off with the West Indies winning the toss and choosing to bat. Any fears regarding rustiness in the host team, which was playing its first Test match of the year, were laid to rest by debutant Sohag Gazi (32-6-97-3), who dealt a severe blow
to the Windies by sending hard-hitter http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CH-Gayle-c1221 (24 off 17) back to the pavilion in the 5th over.
The Tigers put up a spirited and competitive show, with Sohag Gazi following up the first breakthrough with the wicket of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DM-Bravo-c1386 (14) in the 17th over, leaving the Windies at 74 for 2. Opener Kieran Powell, meanwhile, held firm at the crease,
and followed up his 32-run opening stand with Gayle, with a 42-run partnership with Bravo.
Another 32-run stand followed, this time for the 3rd wicket, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 last month, Samuels had expressed a wish to make his mark in the longer format of the game – however,
he only managed to reach 16, after which he was caught out by Gazi at deep square leg off http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahadat-Hossain-c2480 (14-0-73-1) in the 29th over.
By this point, the Windies were at 106 for 3, and the Tigers looked to be giving the visitors a run for their money. However, Powell held firm at the crease, and ended up bringing his individual score up to a solid 117. He was joined by veteran batsman Shivnarine
Chanderpaul, and the two set about repairing the damage done by Gazi.
Their partnership for the fourth wicket yielded 125 runs, and got the team up to 231 by the 61st over. However, Powell was finally dislodged, after tea, by Gazi, who finished the day with figures of 32-6-97-3.
Chanderpaul, meanwhile, anchored the innings, and brought his individual total up to 123* by the end of the day. He was joined by wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/D-Ramdin-c1299 (52*) after Powell’s exit, and the two set up an unbeaten 130-run partnership for the fifth
wicket, which saw the Windies up to a strong 361 for 4 by stumps on day 1.
Day 2 will see the visitors looking to prolong the ongoing partnership between Chanderpaul and Ramdin, and rack up a tall total, while the Tigers will be hoping to channel the competitive spirit they displayed at the start of the first day, and cut the visitors
off before their total gets out of hand.
