Bangladesh vs Ireland: Shafiul Islam gives a match-winning performance in the 2011 ICC World Cup, after injury scare
Shafiul Islam, the Bangladesh fast-bowler, said that he almost missed yesterday’s game against Ireland, in which he produced a match-winning spell to help his team to victory. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shafiul-Islam-c2479 had injured his shoulder in the practice
session on Wednesday which made him a doubtful starter for their match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751.
Shafiul said while talking to the reporters, “Even yesterday (Thursday) I was unsure whether I would be able to play as I sustained an injury,"
"I took some ice in the night; I felt good in the morning and reported that to my captain. Afterwards, the management decided to give me another shot," he added.
Shafiul had a disastrous start to his World Cup campaign in the first match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Virender-Sehwag-c95429 humiliated him, and smashed him for 69 runs in the seven overs he bowled.
The 21-year-old bounced back in the very next match and produced a marvelous spell of 4/21 to redeem himself and reaffirmed his status as the spearhead of the Bangladeshi bowling attack. His bowling figures are now the best for
any Bangladesh bowler in a World Cup.
"I always believed that I would be able to make a comeback and I am happy that I did," Shafiul said.
Shafiul’s four wicket haul enabled http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 to defend a modest score on a day when the minnows, Ireland, seemed well set to overwhelm the host team. His match altering performance will also do much to boost Bangladesh’s confidence;
the team is missing the services of their premium fast bowler, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mashrafe-Mortaza-c1917.
"I was told by the captain to keep faith in myself and bowl in the right areas. He was sure Ireland would give away their wickets if I could do this and this was what happened," said Shafiul.
The Tigers are the only team that have three specialist fast bowlers in their World Cup squad but have been struggling with their options, hence this would go a long way in solving that problem.
The Bangladesh captain, Shakib al-Hasan, used his fast bowler in two spells with his second one proving to be extremely effective in which he gave away just 11 runs.
