  1. Most people in the third world do not have mains electricty, however, many people do have solar power, even if this is only for lighting. This provides cheap and efficient light, and save people from having to buy expensive Kerosene, which is also a fire hazard.

Tropical sunset is normally around 6pm, so these lanterns allow children to study in the evening, and their parents to earn extra money by working at home.

  2. Scale counts. There are many small holdings owned by either very poor people, or people who work off the farm. The rice operation will not allow them to have power, but their off-farm work may.  I do not have statistics, but I think fewer than half have 'officially' any power supply.

Large farms are a different story. Large rice production does pay enough to provide power.

But are we looking for average? The average presumably do not have power because there are far fewer large farms.

Now, there are rental operations, Off farm people come in to their piece of floodplain and grow rice,  but may have power back in town. Are we thinking of these as rice farmers because a major part of what they grow is rice?
