http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747’s Asia Cup final appeal disappointing: PCB – Cricket News Update
The Pakistan Cricket Board has expressed disappointment with the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s decision to lodge an appeal against Pakistan for deliberately obstructing batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mahmudullah-c1877 in the last over of the Asia Cup final.
The result of the tournament final, which was played on March 22 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, ended in a narrow 2-run defeat for the hosts. However, this outcome has been called into question by the BCB, who claim that Pakistan pacer Aizaz
Cheema deliberately blocked Mahmudullah during the first ball of the 50th over of the match as he attempted to take a second run.
ICC rules dictate that Bangladesh could have been awarded 5 penalty runs – however, while umpire http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stephen-James-Davis-c91106 had a word with Cheema after his collision with Mahmudullah, he did not single any penalty runs.
The BCB expressed the intent to lodge a complaint for deliberate obstruction, seeking 5 penalty runs, and requesting that the result of the final be reviewed.
“It is clear that Cheema blocked Riyad deliberately,” said chairman of the BCB operations committee, Enayet Hossain Siraj, adding that the board would lodge an appeal with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), and send a copy to the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625.
However, the PCB is not happy with the stance their Bangladeshi counterparts have adopted.
“It's really sad and disappointing to hear the statement from BCB official,” said PCB director http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Intikhab-Alam-c64380.
“It was a thrilling final and everyone praised Bangladesh for their fight and their decision to appeal is just an afterthought after the result,” he said, adding that it was ridiculous for the host team to be raising such an issue 48 hours after the match.
Their participation in the tournament final marked a milestone for the Tigers, who had managed to win just 2 matches out of the last 29 they played in nine previous tournaments prior to the Asia Cup – against teams like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hong-Kong-c2919 and UAE.
However, the Asia Cup saw the home team upsetting both http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 with 5-wicket wins. The final culminated in a 2-run loss, made all the more upsetting by to the fact that it was such a narrow defeat. However, despite Bangladesh's obvious effort
and disappointment, the PCB maintains that the appeal is uncalled for.
“The fact of the matter is that no match umpire or referee complained about this to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 management and Bangladesh's complaint will spoil a wonderful final which everyone enjoyed,” said Alam. “It's the prerogative of the umpires, but in this case the
umpire did not signal any penalty runs.”
