Question:

Bank Chargers after A cancelled Direct Debit went out of my account, what can I do?

When I was living in Student accommodation I set up a direct debit with Demon to supply our internet. The DD was for £19.99, but I cancelled it in the September after the years contract run out. 10 months later I found that Demon had still been taking the DD even though I cancelled it with the bank. This then made me go over my overdraft and incur ridiculous amounts of £50.00 set charges. I've since sorted most of this out, and Demon have refunded me the £199.90 they owed me for 10 months of DD's, however I'ts nearly a year on and I'm still trying to pay off the banks charges and my overdraft so I can cancel the account. I'm pretty sure I would have paid it off by now if I wasnt charged so much by the bank for their error.

I've complained continuously because as far as I'm concerned they shouldnt have let the DD go out, which caused the charges, but I'm getting nowehere. Does anyone know what I can do to get my money back? I've paid about £350 in charges because of all this

  1. Ring/write to the bank - give them ONE LAST chance to sort it out. Give them 7 days to refund the charges. DO NOT speak to anyone less than Asst Branch Manager.

If they fail - go straight to their head office.

If that fails - lodge a complaint with the Financial Services Authority - they will take it up for you.

    OR

You could do what my mate did - he printed out a load of papers detailing waht the bank had done (they failed to cancel his DD as well) - he got charged a fortune - with the papers - he stood in the bank handing them out to customers as they came in. Soon got his money back and some

  2. they should not have charged you anything ask for your money back if that does not work then tell them you will go to the bank ombodsman he can make the bank pay you back

  3. If you cancelled it with the bank then there should be some record of it. Call and ask to speak to a manager and tell them the situation. If you have old papers around try to find the paper from when you cancelled the DD or anything that could prove that it was supposed to stop. Banks are supposed to have these papers on file for at least a year in the branch where you cancelled it.

    Good Luck

If demon refunded the money then you could try to use any record that you have from them saying that you cancelled it and that the DD was to stop. I wouldn't give up just at the branch ask for the customer service # and call that to remember there is always someone higher than the manager.  If you can prove somehow that they are in the wrong then they should refund All fees that you have been charged
