Bank deposit error? How at fault am I?

Ok so here's what happened. I went to deposit $850 in my account. I was in a rush and although I had counted the money the night before and wrapped it in a deposit slip (pre filled out with my account number) I did not count it before putting it in the drive thru tube. All I did was put the cash wrapped in the deposit slip in the tube and send it off. I honestly dont remember if I even filled out the slip with the amount...but dont you think they would have asked me 2? Anyways...there is a possiblity that someone might have stolen it before I even went to the bank b/c I have some family staying with me. Ok! So this was 3 weeks ago... I check my account today and it says that deposit was for $200 not $850....(I'm sure this is getting confusing) But how could I find out what happened? The receipt is gone, I know I threw it away....am I screwed?

  1. NO!!! same thing happened to me! I went to the bank asked them for their copy of the deposit slip and if it's different from your bank statement show them.  But if it has to get serious you have video cameras to cover your behind!!!

  2. as for some of these ideas of "video tape" it's not an easy accessible process that banks get for any situation from any customer who thinks or doesn't remember any part of the transaction and has no receipt of the transaction. the best of all plans would be to go to the bank and ask for a copy of the deposit slip imprint that was made ( or save yourself the hassle and time if your bank offers online banking go into your transactions and pull up the copy of the deposit slip yourself and see!...this will show the amount that was written in by the individual who filled it out for you. if you didn't fill it out at all, it's not likely that the individual purposely input the wrong amount..(and stole the rest, cause they would have to be betting you wouldn't remember the amount in which case if bank employee misconduct is in question tapes are scanned, no one is going to put themselves at that risk..{side note bunny trail the only time employee theft is logically purposely feasible would be in the event you filled out the deposit slip for 800, but actually gave 850...giving them the out of your hand written 800 varified while swiping the extra 50 not mentioning your mistake and hoping you won't remember) but by seeing the amount actually that was written in you'll be able to see whether it was a scanning problem, a posting problem, or maybe if it was transfered elsewhere. hope this helps.

  3. the bank would have a copy of your deposit receipt although it would probably show $200 was deposited.  best you can do is go to the bank and meet with a manager and explain the deal.  They'll think you're nuts or trying to scam them but if you're honest, professional looking, and act mature they may double check it.  You probably had the money stolen or you just messed up, not a bank error....

  4. This happened to me once in  a similar situation.  My bank happened to have video of my deposit and the teller counting the money. If they have it on tape or a copy of  a deposit  slip it would help.

  5. Like a light bulb. And who`s to say the teller didn`t help herself to it? You have no way of knowing or proving it. But i know it will bother you for a long time. It happened to me years ago and i still wonder.  Good luck. You will be blessed  and will get it back 10 fold!

  6. Probably.

Sorry but you should NEVER dispose of any kind of bank receipt until you have verified that it shows up on your bank statement.  Without the receipt, it's just your word against theirs.

It will probably end up being a very expensive lesson.

Also, never leave a bank without a receipt of some kind and always fill out those forms.  It's hard to believe that they did not make you fill it out.  You can ask to see a copy of the deposit slip and if it's not your writing on the deposit slip, someone at the bank filled it out for you.  I don't know if that's  legal.  You may have a case after all.

  7. you need your copy of the deposit receipt. If you don't have it then at least you learned now to always keep your receipts untill you verify in your account that the $850 appeared. your deposit receipt is your only proof. you should also check your account more often because you said you waited 3 weeks and that is not soon enough.

  8. wow girlfriend!! your the one at fault, sorry. #1 you did not recount the money before giving it to the teller. #2 your not sure if you even filled it out?? #3 you should ALWAYS get a receipt and you should ALWAYS look at it before you drive off!! You may be able to get a tape of the drive thru incident, you may have a long drawn out affair and you may look like a fool in the end. It's up to you. But, I also agree with the one lady-it may just be an expensive lesson to you. Life definitely isn't fair, I hope you or they find the money in all respects, no one likes losing money!!-Good luck hon!-SHAN:)
