Question:

Bank never recorded a withdrawl

I don't know what to do! I deposited a $2000 check into my bank account on 7/16. I waited for it to clear and a few days later I withdrew the whole amount leaving my account empty so I could pay bills. Days later I checked my account online and it said all the money was still there! I even called to double check and sure enough it was and was told that any transaction would show right away. As of today it is still there. Morally I know I should say something but knowing I'm a new mom out on maternity leave without a dollar, literally, to my name, i can only pray this was a mistake that will not bite me in the butt. How long should I go before I touch it and are there any laws too watch for?

  1. Even if the bank for some reason thinks that you did not withdrawl these funds now, who's to say that at the end of the week / month, their accounting folks won't review their own records and catch their error? I would definitely tell your bank what happened. If you don't you may use the extra $2K and then have the bank ask for it back - which would be an even worse situation.

  2. tell your bank your situation

  3. Do not "spend the money twice" because of two reasons:

    1.  To do so is wrong

    2.  The discrepancy will be caught upon audit and you'll be responsible for the overdraft on funds. There is no justifiable way to keep the money if you've already withdrawn it.
