Hi, I am going away to India for 20 days and I expect no transactions with my bank of america account for this time. Is it possible that my bank of america account will get blocked? When does an account get blocked?

  1. I work at a bank and am very confused by what you mean by "blocked".

Are you thinking that if you don't use your account that it will close out and you won't be able to get your money?

Most accounts only close out after 60-90 days of inactivity, but if it did 'close out' you would still get your money, they cannot keep it from you.

We also "block" purchases made from outside the US to protect your account, but that will not hurt your account, it will just mean that we will block your card incase someone steals it. Identity theft greatly increases outside of the US. Ask your bank what countries they block purchases from.

The best thing you can do is ask your bank about how quickly they close their accounts after they enter the "idle stage" which is when the account isn't used.

I hope this helps, call your bank! :)

  2. No it takes a lot longer than 20 days for your account to become invalid if you have enough funds in it.

  3. Hi, i work with BOA, and no the bank won't block or close your account, it takes 3 months of inactivity to do that.If you think you're gonna be in India longer than that, you can use your on line banking from India and do some transfers between your checking and savings, that's enough activity to keep the account open.

Make sure to call customer service to let them know you'll be abroad so they can add a note to your card, in that case if you need to use the debit card anywhere, the bank won't block it.
