First off lets say for example you have $400 in savings, and $100 in checking, and you buy something for $102 can a credit union charge you a $35 NSF fee THEN automactily deduct the $37 from your savings? By deduct I mean Transferr. How is it a NSF fee when their still taking the money from out of my savings account? I think my bank is purposely choosing a delayed system for debit card use just to rack up on NSF fee's, I buy something today and I don't get charged until next week, I know they freeze a certain amount of my available balance after I use my card but then they don't freeze certain transactions..

  1. Yes, they can charge you the fee. A NSF check was written. They cover the NSF amount by deducting from the other account.

I remeber once when the president of Mellon Bank was being interviewed on the radio.  He said the bank make more on fees than they do on any other item.  That gives you an idea of how eager they are to charge things like the NSF fee.

  2. It's called the right of set off from any funds that are available from your accounts.

  3. Banks don't delay debit transactions.  They say it "comes out immediately" but it takes time for the merchant to send it to the bank.   I'm guessing that they charged you $35 to do the transfer. Not for a "NSF"
