I just got back from the bank and I realized that I made a terrible mistake. I put $40.00 into the deposit envelope, while only keying in a deposit amount of $20.00. Is there any way that I can keep from losing the $20.00 that I failed to key in, or did I just pay the bank a $20.00 STUPIDITY fee! Has anyone ever had this happen? Did you get your money back? I'm with Scotiabank and I've already sent them an email explaining the situation. I can't go to the bank untill it opens on Monday. Please HELP me. I don't want to lose $20.00 over a bit of fatigue!

  1. Thee should be a 24 hour number on your ATM card and/or the bank's web site.  Call the bank and talk to them.

  2. Call the bank right away and keep your fingers crossed that you had an honest teller.

  3. Don't worry the bank will not keep your money.....this happens more often than you think-  what will most likely happen is whenever your deposit is physically removed from the ATM by a human being and verified they will realize that you made an error and credit/ deposit your "extra" $20 and your whole deposit will be for $40 they'll most likely send you a letter stating that there was a deposit correction and that your account has been credited the additional $20.

FYI All ATM deposits are verified by a actual person to ensure they balance to what the customer has indicated on the deposit ticket or the envelope so in your case this will happen on Monday----so for right now you're out the $20 but when your error is discovered and corrected you'll have your $20 back in your account

  4. Best not to deposit cash except to a live teller. If it's a check, they will fix it for you and notify you that you keyed in the wrong amount. If it's cash and the person taking the money out of the envelope sees nobody around, they might pocket the $20. Never deposit cash. Think about this. Suppose you deposited $90 and you tell the bank you deposited $100. How will you prove you're right and how will the bank prove you're wrong. Best not to mess with cash.

  5. If it was cash, you will be depending on the honesty of the person opening the envelopes.  99.9% of the time you'll be okay.

I've made mistakes when depositing checks (I wrote down $5 when I meant $50) and they caught it before I did.

  6. The ATM printed something on the envelope to match it to the deposit.  Someone at the bank has to match the envelopes the the ATM statement and verify the amounts actuality match.  I made a similar mistake about a month ago and my account was corrected properly in about 3 days.
