Are there any banks in Jamiaca that you can do online banking with? My father inlaw lives there and I would think this would be better then using western union.

  1. All the major banks in Jamaica do online banking but you have to sign up in branch for the service. NCB and Scotiabank are the two post popular but there are also First Caribbean, RBTT, and many others. They equip you with a login and password with which you can view information, transfer to other bank accounts (your accounts only) and pay bills. This can be checked from anywhere in the world. On a computer or mobile device.

I am not sure whether the online banking can be used instead of a remittance service but certainly there are routing numbers that will allow you to do wire transfers from a bank in any country to a Jamaican account. The banks charge a percentage of the transfer as a fee.

  2. I dont know exactly what u mean but..Yes,some local banks have  been offering online banking for about a year now.You can usually only do simple transfers between accounts, pay bills, etc.

As far as I know only one bank in Jamaica currently allows wires to be sent online from Jamaica (First caribbean).Whether or not the bank has online banking you should be able to send wires from your bank abroad to Jamaica (using your bank's online facility) and it should go straight into your Father-in-law's account provided u have his account number. He can then access the money with his ATM/debit card (If he doesn't have he should get one).

You will also need the routing code for the bank.I believe the one for NCB is JNCBJMKX.Check swift.com for other banks (type the bank name in the BIC SEARCH field - u might have to sift through many results).

Oh, I just read your additional details..Well u need account from NCB,Scotiabank or Firstcaribean to check from anywhere in the world.I dont know if Linking to the checking account is possible.

  3. Yes.  You can set up an account online, and a debit card an also be issued by them.

    National Commercial Bank Jamaica Ltd

    1-888-NCB-FIRST   (622-3477)

    P.O. Box 88,

    Kingston, Jamaica. W.I.

They have a few offices all over Jamaica,  the Atrium in New Kigston.

  4. The major banks in Jamaica all have online banking services that can be viewed form anywhere in the world. To set it up all you need to have (for personal/individual) is an account and an atm card attached to it.

The limitation however, is that local online banks are not yet configured to allow inter-bank transactions. Even when this IS allowed, you probably will not be able to do one-click outgoing international transactions. This could unacceptably increase theft risks. More significantly, anti-money laundering officials would have a problem with such easy movement of international funds.

The main option for international transfers is electronic (wire) transfers. The bank can give you info about how to do this. IF your USA bank allows you to send wire transfers online then your problem could be solved. You can have a one way path to your father in law's bank account.

  5. The banks there rip you off on fees. Try a money market account like JMMB. They have good interest rate & will cut a check ( that your Dad can cash at NCB ) with just a phone call....in 15 minutes, the check is ready. And they have wiring service, just open an account & get the letter with wire instructions..

Easy & MUCH better than the banks ;-)

  6. All major commerical banks offer online banking.  You will not be able to transfer money from your US account to the Jamaican bank.

If you don't like using Western Union, you can make a wire transfer to your father in law's account from your bank.  It does not matter whether he has a US or Jamaican dollar account.
