Bankruptcy in a different state

I moved to Illinois last July. I moved here from Indiana. I have a lot of debt from Indiana. There is simply no way that I can even begin to repay this debt, so I want to file bankruptcy. My question is, can I go to a bankruptcy lawyer here in Illinois to file for my Indiana debt?

  1. it could be possible.

  2. Yes, you are to file in Illinois.  Person files in state of legal residency.

You can also go to www.cccs.org and see if there is an alternative.  That is a non-profit group.

  3. Seek the advice of the last poster for the cccs.org, or contact a local attorney, even though you lived in Indiana, you have been in Illinois long enough to file in the state you are now living. Most bk attorney's will see you on a first free consult, you'll need last 6 months of income, assets if any, list of all your debts and last 4 years of taxes, once reviewed the attorney will be able to tell you what you qualify for. Good Luck!

  4. hollymccartney, I got into a lot of financial trouble a couple years ago. I really wish I contacted a lawyer before I filed for bankruptcy. Now it will take me 7 years to establish a good credit score again. I live in Hawaii so I can't recommend anyone in Illinois, but I'd recommend contacting a prefessional. http://www.bankruptcylawyersite.com/Illi...
