Ok, so its my 30th birthday this weekend. I have gone back to college to study, therefore funds are low...I asked my bank to change my repayment date for my direct debits and bank loan to 22nd August....they emailed me to say its all done. They even clarified and confirmed the dates!! THEN today, I check my account...theres no money in there.

Im so upset! Its my b.day celebrations tomorrow! I cant even afford to go!

I spoke to a manager at my bank tonight who was helpful but couldnt refund the mistake! he did try to refund a charge from May to soften the blow. He said hes 99% sure the reversed charge should come back to my account tomorrow..but theres a chance it wont as its a saturday! does anyone know if it can still go in tomorrow? My bank is HSBC.

Im not sure how these things work and I am so upset! They have left me with nothing! its going to ruin my celebrations! help! xx

  1. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict when they will correct it.

  2. if you have a credit card call it in on cost service because they will call your bank and when a credit service deals with a bank the whole process is A LOT faster than when you deal with the bank directly.

  3. I would try and get a hold of the person above the manager like a VP.  I worked at a bank for 6 years if you get up high enough they can at least give you a temporary credit until the fix there mess!!!  The higher up you can get the quicker things get done!!!

    Good Luck & Happy Birthday!

  4. sometimes when you cancel a DD they come off on the date it was due but go back at the close of business that day. it should be back tonight or even tomorrow morning if not already.

  5. this answer may not be popular or the one you want to hear, but i suggest you look at this from a different angle. if you cant get the bank to refund your money in time to spend it on your b-day, i say change your plans to something that costs less (or even better - free). Always assuming of course that you cant "freeload" (such a stigmatized word:) the money from say an older brother or parent (you are pretty old so i dont know if they will find it cute, lol). Be thankful that you dont have the money to spend on some frivolity and when the bank finally does get around to reimbursing you, do something more well thought-out with it that will last you longer than just say one day of hardcore celebrating.

if that doesnt satisfy you and you still want to party, you could do a payday loan, lol. but i wouldnt advise that unless its an emergency, as in non-retractable plans.

  6. i'm sorry, that stinks!

i know that sometimes when you change a automatic payment, it can take until the next month to be in effect. unfortunately, there isn't anything that can be done!

talk to your friends maybe they'll be willing to buy you some drinks! it's your b-day, alcohol should be free :-)

  7. I would say that yes it should be there tomorrow...but as the manager has stated, just because something "should" happen, it doesn't mean that it always will happen. Sorry.

Try using a credit card or get a PayDay advance...

  8. HSBC is the worst. I have paid them massive fees in the past. I would go and sit down with a manager and try and explain your situation. They have a certain amount of fees each month that they are allowed to reverse. If you can convince them that it was their mistake than they should be willing to help you.
