Question:

Banquet Dinners - healthy for kids?

A little history here... We have a 8yo at home "full time" and a 12yo - my stepson- over the summer. At our house we cook meals on a daily basis - usually from scratch. To my surprise, my stepson was telling us that he eats 5 days out of 7 the frozen dinners. Somehow that did not sit well with me... But before I make a big fuss about it, I thought I'd better ask. Is this healthy for a p*****n? Is there any nutritional value in the frozen dinners?

Thank you

  1. Freshly cooked meals are always best, however, some foods can be just as good that are frozen. Even meals cooked from scratch can be frozen and eaten later so maybe he's talking about those.

Also note that they now believe that veg that is frozen is healthier than fresh or tinned veg as the goodness and nutrional elements are 'locked', whereas they disintergrate in fresh and tinned foods over time. So not everything thats frozen is necessarily worse than fresh.

Is it really your place to question what he eats when hes at home with his own mother??  If this doesnt sit well with you then you do what you feel is right and his mum will do what she feels is right.

  2. no those are disgusting food. good for you for making REAL food. although watch the the calrories and fat. those are unhealthy and you should confront the mom.

  3. Aside from all the chemicals and sodium,

it's regular food.....    I personally have a freezer stocked with

    them.

  4. I would think that they are not healthy everyday, the salt content is high, same with fat, calories.

I would never have my child eat that garbage but I am not a working mom so I have time to cook- right now I am making my own baby food.

He might end up with high cholestrol due to his diet.

  5. I'd be concerned too! The Banquet dinners are generally very high in fat and sodium and offer little to no nutritional value. If you need to get some T.V. dinner due to time restraints, I'd go with Healthy Choice. They have a better balance nutritionally and a healthier amout of fat and sodium, plus they taste good! Better yet, you could look into making your own dinners and freezing them, so that you always have a healthy meal available.

  6. honestly the frozen dinners are not the best thing in the world for kids because they do not have all the esentails they need those diners are made for a quick fix when people have no time not as a way of life kids need home cooked meals

  7. probably not. fresh, homemade meals are much healthier. there aren't that many nutritional values to these high calorie meals.

  8. Prepared foods have a lot of sodium.  Other than that, they are 'nutritious' in that they contain protein, vitamins and minerals.

  9. No, they're not the best choice for a daily meal. With that being said though, I know a lot of people who eat like that. Either tv dinners or Burger King every night. I don't really think it's your place to make a big fuss about it.
