Question:

Baptize in two churches?

My cousin was baptized catholic and now is becoming united methodist. She never told the pastor that she was baptized as a child and she was wondering if there is anyway the pastor will find out that she was already baptized if she doesn't tell him. Like is there a baptism registry or anything like that.

Thanks

  1. every devout catholic has their babies baptized. so, i am sure he knows. i am not sure, however, if they would require her to be re-baptized. i think they both do infant baptisms. parents are given a baptismal certificate when the baby is baptized. i'm sure she could show it to him. then all will be well.

  2. The Methodist church recognizes Catholic baptism. She would only need to be confirmed in the Methodist church. She needs to tell the pastor.

  3. If you are in a church where it matters if you were baptized before, you are in the wrong place. A "baptism" at birth is useless. Baptism is meant to be an outward profession of your inward conversion. After you have accepted Christ as your Savior, you basically show the burial of the old person and the resurrection of the new. Sprinkling a child with water at birth will do nothing for that child.

  4. She can be whatever religion she wants to be. It does not matter if she was baptized before. Often children are baptized as children by their parents. In the Catholic religion when you become Confirmed that is a choice the individual makes for themselves.

  5. Baptism is a public symbol of your decision to follow Christ. If she wants to get baptized again to show that she is dying to her old self to become a new person, that's fine.  Some Christians get rebaptized because they recommit to Christ. But usu. it's a one time thing. The baptism isn't important, the faith is. Baptism won't get you to heaven, faith in Jesus will. Tell her congrats by the way!

  6. That is a great way to start out  at a church with a lie..There are records that can be obtained. But I can;t figure why your cousin would not tell them. In God's eyes she is baptized as a Catholic and that can not be changed . But she could go  the route of reaffirmation of Baptism-which is done at a Methodist church.

  7. He's not going to care if she was baptized before as a Catholic.

If anything he's probably be happy about her getting rebaptized in his church.

  8. It's not going to matter, when she was baptized as a child, it didn't mean anything anyhow. You have to be old enough to understand, and be able to accept Jesus yourself and be able to understand what the whole thing means. Children don't understand, and aren't able to accept Jesus, so the child baptism means nothing. But she should be honest and tell them.

  9. the methodist church recognizes the baptism of the catholic church & vice versa.  they both baptize "in the name of the father, son & the holy ghost."

the only way you would have to be re-baptized (at least in the catholic church) is if you are baptized the way the apostles baptize (in the book of acts ... the history book of the new testament church)... which is "in Jesus' Name" ... which is the name of the Father, Son & Holy Ghost.

the councl of nicea in the 300's (which later became the catholic church) CHANGED the method & mode of baptism from the way the apostles baptized.  the apostles, who were taught by Jesus Christ Himself,  immersed in water (as burying something) & "in Jesus' Name" was used ... not "in the name of the Father, Son & Holy Ghost".  we are to USE the name, not just repeat the command  matthew 28:19.
