Yes US $ is widely accepted in Barbados you will however receive you change in Barbados $.  If you exchange at the bank the rate will be $1.98.  Most other places exchange for $2:1

The Barbados dollar is tied to the US dollar, and $1.00 US dollar equals about $2.00 BDS. Barbados accepts U.S. dollar bills, but not U.S. coins. If you present U.S. dollars for purchase on the island, you will receive BDS dollars in exchange. Before leaving the island, you can go to any bank with your passport and airline ticket and get your money exchanged back into U.S. dollars.

I would exchange your currency for BDS after arriving to the island. It just makes things simple. If you exchange $200 U.S. dollars, you will get about $400 BDS - but has stated above, you will only have $200 of spending power.
