Question:

Barbara Elizabeth Katanic and Bernard Olson marriage?

My paternal grandmother was Barbara Elizabeth Katanic (or as I knew her as, Barbara Vitiello) and I have found information about a marriage between her and Bernard Olson, but in trying to trace Mr. Olson, I can not find anything about him and I also can not find any information on where the last name of Vitiello figures into the picture.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

  2. I would try and track John Vascelik and where Carterer NY might be.  Also, Barbara and Bernard might have been divorced?  You might be able to ask a family member if they remember this marriage or person or a scandle.

    [Barbara Elizabeth Katanic]

    Father: Katanic

    Birth: 25 Dec 1909 - Pennsylvania

    Death: 21 Feb 1992 - San Diego

This may be your grandmother's ship record when she came back from Prague, has her name as Berta

    Name: Berta Katanic

    Birth: 25 Dec 1909

Arrival: 23 Feb 1932 - New York, New York

She was born in Clairton, PA and she's living with friend John Vascelik in Carterer, NY.

Do you know when your grandmother went to California?

  3. This is what I found:

    California Death Index:

    Name:  Barbara Elizabeth Vitiello

    SS#:  070146298  -  issued in New York

Date of Birth:  12/25/1909 in Pennsylvania

Date of Death:  2/21/1992 in San Diego, Callifornia

    Mother's Maiden name:  Sohlnika

    Father's surname:  Katanic

Her legal name was Vitiello at the time of her death.  There is no mention of the name Olson.  It would seem to me that she remarried sometime after Bernard Olson's death to someone with the name Vitiello.

  4. looking at your other questions, it is interesting that Barbara is not listed in the ssdi, but does show up in CA death index.  However.. the CA does include her social security number, which means there should be a file there in social security.  I would personally pay for that file, since it will perhaps include some clue as to when the name change happened.

You also indicate that your dad IS from the first marriage? What that provides is dad's date of birth..but also the PLACE. What I am getting at, is placing Bernard Olson somewhere, as well as tracing when your grandmother arrived in California. Or, where is it that your father grew up, went to school, so forth?  Presumably,  she would still be married to Bernard when the sons were born.

I ran a check for Bernard Olson in the ssdi, and it has 91 of that name.  It could be narrowed down.. I would eliminate any of those where the birth date is after 1914, as those would be too young to be married in 1934.  I would then look closely at WHERE THE SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER WAS ISSUED.. since this may match the state where grandma was, when the boys were born.  Tedious, but they don't call it "search" for nothing.

You also need to verify the name of Mr Vitiello, which should show up somewhere in her documentation. Locate his dates, and hopefully when/where he died.  One or both of them are likely to show up in ww2 enlistment or draft records.

I assume you have dad's birth certificate?  All are different.. but in some cases, it will include the AGE AND PLACE OF BIRTH for both parents. This might narrow down the hunt for Bernard.

The next step may depend on the results from these questions.

    edit-

looks to me like the Bernard in San Diego in 1930 is a HUGE likelihood.
