Barbara Jardin wins Women’s 200m freestyle heats: Day three - Canadian Olympic & Paralympic Trials
Barbara Jardin of PPO dominated the qualification rounds Women’s 200m freestyle on third day of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials in Montreal on Thursday, March 29.
The 20-year-old Jardin faced no difficulty in overpowering her challengers and transpired into the playoff as top fastest swimmer. Her alluring effort remained almost two strokes ahead of Samantha Cheverton, who qualified into the final as second best swimmer.
Jardin stayed 0.15 seconds ahead of her following rival and emerged on the finishing end for first position by clocking a time of 1 minute and 59.22 seconds. Similarly, Cheverton made her way into the final round by touching the wall in a time of 1 minute
and 59.37 seconds.
She was trailed by Amanda Reason of ESWIM, who stayed just 0.28 seconds behind and earned her way into the playoff as third best finisher by submitting a time of 1 minute and 59.65 seconds. The 18-year-old Reason was chased by her team-member, Brittany MacLean,
who tapped the finishing wall with the timing of 1 minute and 59.90 seconds for fourth qualifying position.
The fifth spot of the discipline was secured by Heather MacLean of VAND, who remained just 0.95 seconds behind and posted a time of 2 minutes and 00.85 seconds to reach the final.
Lindsay Delmar of UCSC snared sixth best spot of the race as she stayed only 0.02 seconds apart from former finisher and clocked an effort of 2 minutes and 00.87 seconds.
Subsequently, Sinead Russell of BWSC remained just 0.40 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and reported an effort of 2 minutes and 01.27 seconds to enter the playoff.
The 18-year-old Russell was trailed by Alyson Ackman of PCSC, who ensured her place in the final round by occupying last qualification spot of the race. The 19-year-old Ackman was almost one second slower from her foregoing competitor and appeared on the
finishing blockade with the timing of 2 minutes and 02.16 seconds.
Furthermore, Jardin was contented with her magnificent effort, as she is only one-step away from confirming her place in the Canadian team to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
