Barbarians' fullback Isa Nacewa’s last minute try helps Bar Baas defeat Wales – Rugby update
Barbarians defeated the Wales at Millennium Stadium, Cardiff on Saturday June 4, to win their second match of the summer 2011 season. Isa Nacewa’s 79th minute try helped Barbarians overcome the four point’s deficit in the last minutes of the game.
Saturday’s encounter was also the 100th international appearance for the Welsh international fly half Stephen Jones. The game was a try fest as both teams scored nine tries in the game. Barbarians outplayed Wales by five tries to four. However, Barbarians only succeed to convert on three occasions as compared to Wales’ five successful conversions in the game.
Wales started the match strongly and were the first to score in the match, courtesy of their winger George North’s try in the 10th minute of the game. Stephen Jones followed by his conversion to put the home side in lead.
Barbarians lock, Joe Tekori, scored another try during the 17th minute of the game. This was followed by Nacewa’s first try of the game during the 21st minute of the game. Nacewa’s efforts were complemented by Bar Baas fly half Brock James successful conversion.
In the remaining part of the first half both teams exchanged a try each followed by conversions by their respective fly halves in the 25th and 35th minute. Wales' fullback Morgan Stoddart scored a try during the 24th minute of the game followed by Bar Baas number eight Sergio Parisse’s 34th minute try.
Wales was trailing by five points at half time and started the second half strongly. Both teams lost a player each in this part of the game. Wales’ winger, Aled Brew, was sin binned first during the 43rd minute of the game followed by 45th minute sit out of Tekori.
Wales scrum half, Mike Phillips, 53rd minute try equalised the scores while Jones’ conversion put the Welsh in the lead again. Wales extended their lead by their winger Blew’s 65th minute try followed by Jones successful conversion.
Wales however failed to hold the Bar Baas late surge, in which Willie Mason’s played the vital role. Mason set up two tries as he continued to impress the fans after switching codes from the 13-man league. Bar Baas centre Mathieu Bastareaud scored a try in the 72nd minute followed by Nacewa’s 79th minute try which sealed the deal for the Barbarians.
