I know that Barbaro was named after a foxhound in a painting the Jackson's have but does anyone know where I can see that painting with all the names of the dogs? Or if you already know all the names of the dogs. Thanx because I would really like to see or know all the names of the foxhounds in that picture.

  1. I'm not sure if anyone outside of the Jackson's has seen the painting, I read it somewhere that it hangs on their mantle. I got this blurb off of http://www.timwoolleyracing.com/news/200... I thought this was really cute! Here it is:

Linda Lee - I read a cute story about the name Barbaro. BEFORE the Kentucky Derby, Michael Matz was being interviewed and was asked by the interviewer what the name Barbaro meant. Michael Matz turned to Peter Brette, the assistant trainer, and repeated the question. Peter Brette immediately replied "KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER!".

Lynette then provided the more official version of the name, from the link: Batting 1.000:

    Paraphrasing:

Mrs. Jackson had foxhunted and competed at hunter trials for much of her life.

Barbaro got his name from a foxhound in a five-panel 1880's painting the Jackson's discovered in Mr. Jackson's mother's attic after her death. Each dog had their name written at the bottom of their picture. They chose the hound on the right-hand side, Barbaro. The painting is now in the family room.

It has been speculated that the Jackson's will name Bobby's full brother (the cute foal we have pictures of) after another hound in the painting.

  2. Melissa, you will have to contact the Jacksons themselves- they are the owners of that painting. I do not know the name of the artist or if there are any more copies of the painting in circulation ( from what I understand, the painting in question is a hunting print of some sort, like a Currier and Ives prints that I have on my office wall) say, in a museum or art gallery. If you want to read a good article about Barbaro and the Jacksons, one which has lots of pictures of him, then get yourself a copy of the Smithsonian magazine's April 2007 issue. There is a marvelous article in there about all of the work that they did at New Bolton, and some nice pictures. You should be able to find a copy of the magazine your local library-they usually have subscriptions to just about everything.

  3. NBC is airing a Barbaro documentary at 5pm on April 29th (Barbaro's birthday).  They will show the painting that inspired his name.  You can view the 2 minute trailer at http://www.nbcsports.com and see the painting there.

  4. It was on tv today...  i think it was NBC during the coverage of the IL and SA derbies...  it was part of the Barbaro movie, so they'll probably show it again when the whole movie airs...  it starts on the 29th.

it was a lot different looking than i expected...  it was a black and white photo...  i kinda expected an old painting of something else with a few dogs around, but it's really a picture of 6 dogs.  and the Jacksons just chose the one on the right for a name.  I tried looking for it on the internet, but i couldn't find it...  sorry
